Windows Or Ubuntu?

The first proper Linux operating system was founded/created by a Finnish university student, named Linus Torvalds, and was introduced in the year 1991, as a result of him finding Windows operating systems to complicated or generally not good enough. The word Linux obviously comes from the creator, Linus. Ubuntu is the most popular distribution of the Linux family, and the latest verison, which was only released a few days ago (Sunday10th October), is Ubuntu 10.10.

Windows (and MS-DOS) operating systems have been around since 1981 (that’s a massive 29 years ago!). Obviously the latest release of Windows has been Windows 7. You can the comparisons and differences I made between Windows XP and Windows 7 in this article here.

Many, many professionals who use computers in their organisation tend to use Windows operating systems, XP mainly for it’s super reliability. However, some home users are starting to see the benefits of switching to a Ubuntu operating system.

One of the main advantages of Ubuntu is that there is a new software centre, where every piece of FREEWARE software that are Linux compatible are listed, and organised into categories, depending on what the program is for - the users can simply click, or tick, which software they’d like to install and Ubuntu would do all the rest, it’s that easy! Windows, however, you have to install the software, which ISN’T usually free, via a CD-ROM, or DVD-ROM, and the programs tend to be quite large these days, so it can be a lengthy and sometimes tiresome process. So Ubuntu would score a point for ease of installing software.

Next is the question of personalisation, people will inevitably want their operating system to feel like their own, so they’d want to customise it accordingly to suit their style or taste. Ubuntu has been consistent in being brilliantly customised. You can customise how the windows look, what colour scheme you’d like, what the font sizes are for buttons for example and so much more! Windows, on the other hand, especially Windows XP are very limited on how you can customise the operating system to make it feel like your own. However, the latest version, Windows 7, has been massively improved to incorporate more features that allow you to customise how things look – for example, you can customise the colour of the windows and, the font size. Windows, however, haven’t really been consistent in allowing the user to customise and personalise their experience with the operating systems. So again, a point would go to Ubuntu for this aspect.

Another important aspect of this argument is the computer specs. needed to run the operating system smoothly. Because Windows 7 is updated with all the latest technological breakthroughs and incorporates loads of new features, the memory usage/requirements and hard drive usage is quite high, as is Window Vista. Windows XP, on the other hand, is very good when it comes to the user having a lower spec. computer system, as it doesn’t require that much to run smoothly. Ubuntu, again, have been consistent with the computer specs. needed to run the operating system smoothly. I personally have 2GB of memory, and less than 15% (that’s about 200MB – 300MB) is used at any one time when idle. Windows 7 and Vista use anything between 450MB – 700MB memory when idle. Another point to Ubuntu for computer spec. requirements.

It’s not all about tallying up the points and seeing which is the better operating system out of the two, though. It really is up to you to choose which you like best. If you love using free software, personalising the system, and having an easy operating system to manage, the Ubuntu is the way to go. Windows , mainly XP, is used by many professional big-time companies, but most Web Hosting companies, if you take a look closely, all use Linux operating systems for their servers.

I, personally, really am sat on the fence between these two operating systems. They are actually quite difficult to choose from – which is probably why many people have two operating systems installed at any one time, and simply switch between the two at computer boot-up (that’s one Windows and one Ubuntu by the way).
